My husband and I are both going to school at BYU-Idaho. We both have been very fortunate and have been able to find employment. We don't make a lot of money, but we make it work and we have been very blessed to have our needs met.
When we first got married we were strongly encouraged to start early with building up our own food storage. For many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, building up emergency food storage and being self reliant is a common practice. Often times we envision our parents food storage, a huge pantry in the basement with large shelves filled with canned goods and boxes of whole wheat and rice and some of it becomes part of the home furnishing. (You've seen The RM, right?)
How does a newly wed couple on a college budget, in a dinky apartment build up food storage? Many young people our age don't think about it, or have but don't see the need or feel that they don't have the money to do so. I submit that it's possible, and can be done successfully. Even if you ont have a 3 month supply, that's better than nothing.
Right away my hudband and I came up with a budget plan, and a food storage plan. We live by it, and it has been a huge blessing to our little family of two. I took a class a few semesters ago and one of the lessons was about budgeting, and I created a power point with the tips that we use.
I would like to share it with you, or whoever you would like to share it with, in hopes that it will bless your little family, too.
